Mechanical odometer gear questions after reading archives 200 1980

The odometer in my 1980 245DL reads about 5% low - I can see the tenths digit on the trip meter stop turning briefly once per mile like one tooth of the gear is broken. The instructions on Dave Shannon's page show a mechanical speedometer from a 1981-1993 style cluster - is the gear setup on the 1975-1980 style cluster the same (therefore requiring needle removal)? I count 16 teeth on the gear shown in Dave's instructions - odometergears.com has 25 tooth and 15 tooth gears for sale (for 1986-1993 models), did I miscount or is the gear for the earlier style speedometer not available (I will also call them and ask)? Is there a source for the pre-1981 gear? Thanks

Zack

The best thing to do is take a peek at your speedometer to see what gear you really need. The instrument cluster can act a little stubborn coming out but it will come. Removing the speedometer from the cluster is a matter of removing a few screws. You will be able to see the gear in question at the middle right side.

Odometergears.com should have a match. When you go to the Volvo Electronic Units page click on the Mechanical/Cable Gears link at the upper left.

If I'm the Dave the link is in the sig' there are 2 different odometer repair sections, '86 up and <'85, the information in one is not applicable to the other.

I believe what you need is NOT the odo drive gear but one of the internal
gears. I have some spare speedos around, most of which have complete odos
but bad main drive gears. E-mail me offline if interested in one of these.

Call and ask about the specific gear you need. I have replaced two speedometers gears so far with good results. My experience is the older speedometers are similar in design with minor differences. I currently have a '75 vintage speedometer in my '83. It does not fit well (it does not fill the hole in the instrument panel but it works. Be carefull pulling the needle - use the brad/small nail puller with cardboard to protect from scratching the face.

I was able to install a new gear just by pulling the old one off the end
of the shaft and pushing the new one on - no further disassembly after
getting the speedo out.
