The head gasket of a B230 engine, original from Volvo, has a few smaller holes than the holes for the water passages in the block and head. Does anyone knows the purpose of this design?

I imagine it is to regulate the volume of coolant through the various water jackets/passages by increasing or decreasing pressure,so the flow at #1 (near the pump) will be the same as #4.
