love seat 200 1991

I may be spoiled by the perfectly designed and adjustable seats in the v70 but there is something wrong with my 245 seats. Adjust them up and down, front and back, tilt the seatback whatever they still can't get right wih me. I appears that the seat back is positioned so that the driver is positioned at about a 15 degree angle to right of center. Sitting with both shoulders against the seat ... I am aimed off road! I looked for signs of damage but could find none. viewing both seats together as a pair it appears that the passenger side is aimed about 15 degrees off to the left, giving the appeareance of a nice leather love seat. Nice for making out but not for driving forward. Anybody know if 850 or v70 seats will fit?

Here's the update. My brother in law ... long time 240 expert took one look, hopped in the back seat, suggested I close my eyes and procceded to give the drives seat the knee press of death! He bent the framing back into precisely the right attitude. Wasn't the foam at all.

I have read on Swedish forums (fora? forii?) that people have done successfully what you suggest; putting seats from 850 cars into their 240s. Apparently, a little welding is required. Seats from BMW E36 seem to be popular too. The 740 seats are reportedly a bit too wide.

But as already mentioned, the 240 seats are fairly easy to fix up. I rebuilt the driver's seat on mine with foam and cover from a junked car's passenger seat a couple of years ago with great results. This weekend I tore down the passenger seat as well, as the seat heater and the grid needed repair work. A great opportunity for giving the covers a good wash as well. Machine wash (wool program), drip dry and they look like new. Just be careful, there are lots of sharp objects to cut your hands on in there.

Have a look at Tony Hoffman's great instructions (pictures and text) on my web site: http://home.no.net/ebrox

Good luck!

Erling.

I have seen 244s from 89 have the upper seat foam fail within 30K miles. The failure is much quicker to appear when the seat is covered in cloth, vinyl is the longest, and leather is in the middle. It's a shame that the foam is about $150 a side!

typically what happens when the uppper seat foam tears. the frames can also bend but is not that common. good news is it can be repaired fairly easily. just takes time.

Yup, probably torn upper seat foam.... 200 1991

As said, repair or replace upper foam. While in there check seat frame for bending and tighten all related frame bolts after you're sure the frame is straight. Then all will be well!

Wow . Hadn't thought of that. Seats look perfect in this '91 245 with 117K and both seats measure about the same ... looks like they are designed like that.

Common problem in 240's. Frame digs in with time and tears foam in shoulder area. Their seats simply aren't as durable as the rest of the car!!!

Most of us with high mileage cars have either rebuilt or replaced both upper and lower foam pads. Lots of info about this in the archives. Do a search like "seat rebuild" or similar...

Remember although you only have 117K, that foam is 14 years old and probably shot.
