'93 240 ABS Issue 200

Hi all - on my wife's '93 240 wagon, she has started to experience an intermitent brake issue that I think is related to the ABS system. In slow stop and go traffic, the ABS hydraulic motor that causes the brake pedal to oscillate will come on. Very occasionally - only had it happen to me once, usually for a second or two. No ABS light illuminated on the dash.

Anyone experience this? Do I have a wheel sensor going bad?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Randy

I have a 93 245 that had/has the same problem. It started out as a pulsation accompanied by loud twangs when I would come to a very slow stop. Never happened while braking at speed. For a couple of years, I'd pull the sensors on the front wheels and clean them and that would solve the problem. A few times I'd also have to clean the reluctor wheel behind the disk as well. However, now that doesn't solve the problem, and until I can get around to testing the sensors, I've pulled the fuse to the ABS computer under the passenger seat to eliminate the pulsation, defeating the ABS system.

So, clean the sensors, if that doesn't fix it, clean the reluctors, and if that still doesn't fix it, test and if necessary replace, the sensors.

Hey JK, thanks for the info. When you experienced your problems did the ABS light come on?

Anyone have any ides where to get the sensors (cheap)? I've looked at the parts websites and have found the rear sensor but not the fronts.

Thanks!

No the ABS light never came on. I think that was because, as far as the ABS computer was concerned, the system was working fine - one or more sensors were detecting wheel lockup and the computer told the ABS pump to control it via pulsed pressures to the offending wheel. It didn't matter the sensor was bad.

I'd check RPR and FCP Groten for the sensors. Call them - they can get a lot of things not listed on their web site.

Before you replace the sensors, clean them as I described earlier - this is a common fix. Only after the cleaning fails to fix the problem, then test the sensors. The test involves spinning the wheel and measuring the signal produced by the magnetic pickup of the sensor. Can't remember the particulars.
