240 wagon won't always start 200 1986

My 240 '86 wagon starts most of the times, but, others , say 5 % of the time just won't fire up. No sign of ignition at all, cranks fine. If I unplug and re plug the white pastic module that hands down behind the glove box, it will usually start up. what impact can jiggling have on theis item? Larry

Thanks for the suggestions. Sure enough, the leads from the contacts and the relays in the fuel pump module had seperated from the surrounding solder. I resoldered everything and off she went!. Thanks, again, Larry

I'll make it unanimous, it is the relay. Easy to get on Ebay, from the pick and pull or from me, you should have a few on hand. Soldering can help, often but not always.

Like Danny Mac said it's probably the fuel system relay. Either replace it with a known good one or resolder the circuit board. Also make sure the 25 amp ignition fuse by the battery is corrosion free and there is a good contact with the fuse and the connection to the battery. Both are know problem areas with the 240. That is your fuel pump relay. When it goes bad you lose fuel & spark functions.

There is a known problem with the solder joints failing inside the relay. If you're good with a soldering iron you can open it up & resolder the board connections. Search the archives here for a history of this problem.

Could also be just dirty connection at the plug...try cleaning the contacts & see if that helps.

Good Luck
Danny Mac
