m46 drain plug help? 200 1976

I am replacing the clutch in my bother in laws 76 245. The drain and fill plugs appear to be sqare not hex....what size are these and where do I get a square socket? My 12 pt hex's are wanting to round them off. We are trying to get this done this weekend so any info would be helpful.
Thanks

Like mentioned earlier, start with the fill plug then do the drain plug.

I used a pair of vice grips and a 2 pound sledgehammer.

Worked like a charm.

I didn't even bother with wrenches because none of them fit.

Good luck!

Try an adjustable open end wrench. If it still doesn't want to come loose use a length of pipe over the handle for extra leverage. Space is tight but you should be able to get it loose and then just use the wrench.

alrady tried that, it wants to strip the head before it turns.

I guess I need to know the exact spects on the head and find the correct socket or wrench to do it.

Thanks though

If it's already wanting to round off then I don't think even the correct square socket will help. Use the best biggest tightest fit wrench you can, and just accept that you mangle it. Then either buy a new one, or clean up the plug with a file so that it is an exact fit on any suitable spanner.

I believe it is a 3/8" square, it is that or an 11/16" square. Obviously if it is a big one like the diff fill then it is the larger of the two, if it is a small one like the diff drain then it is the smaller of the two. If you cannot get it off with any of the conventional methods then you will need to take a hammer and a pointed chisel to it to drive it off. Do yourself a favor and do not open the drain until you have made sure that you can get the fill plug out. If you do get the drain plug out and drain it and then can't get the fill plug out you could be screwed.
