Voltmeter, why only turbo? 700 1990

Why were voltmeters only installed factory on turbo models? When it comes to my car, I'm a bit of a control freak and I like to know what it is doing at all times (hence the manual transmission love). Is it possible to put a voltmeter on a non-turbo? There's a spot for it in the cluster, just no gauge. If it can be done, how much work would it be and how much would it be to get one? Would it be worth it? I like to add things to my car that use electricity (such as a 92 watt, 208 watt max total CD player (23 watts, 52 watt max per speaker)) and am planning on putting fog lights and possibly subwoofers in, so I think a voltmeter might be at least marginally helpful...

The turbos were more of the luxury class. An extra bell for extra $$$.

True, except I have the GLE, which is an even higher class than the turbo. It's got chrome trim, etc. And, looking at the prices, it was a fair amount more than the turbo. I could see that logic for Turbo vs GL, but not Turbo vs GLE...

The voltmeter is easy to add. Just get the voltmeter (and wires from the instrument cluster) from turbo model.

OK, so why was it only on the turbo model, then?

They were cheapskates!

Heck, the '88+ 760 and '91+ 740/940 didn't have any volt meters, and some later 940 turbo didn't even have alloys or the boost gauge.
