idle speed not speeding up with a/c on 200 1986

hey all, it's been a while since i've been on here....but a new problem has come up that i havent found an answer to. i just recently got my a/c recharged and all is well and cool except that my idle speed isnt jumping up to compensate for the compressor engaging. is there a relay or something that does this? or is it through the fuel injection computer? i've looked through the Bentley manual and i havent found much info. ANY ideas? Thanks!!

With my 1984 240s and older, I noticed and expected that blip up in idle speed when the compressor kicked in.

With my 1988 240 no such deal. The car has a tach, so I can see. I believe that there is a difference in the ECU controls. When the compressor kicks in, the ECU adds a little more air which just compensates for the compressor drag, so the idle stays pretty constant.

Regards,

Bob

The A/C relay can cause low idle.

I'm not really sure why but the A/C relay can affect the idle speed. There is a short delay (<15 seconds) that occurs after starting before the idle will kick-up.

After starting your car...listen for the click (behind the center console). At that time, you will notice a difference in the idle speed. My '85 is the same as your '86 and I had to replace the relay.

I tried to find the thread in the archives but I couldn't find it.

Good luck.

i do hear the click of the relay when the compressor engages...but the idle doesnt kick up.. would this still be a relay problem? Thanks for the info

Change is good, but

My corporate exposure in the past 5 years has corrupted me, I suppose.

What I want is something you can identify easily. I also wanted something especially simple. The last logo did not work for those goals.

I suppose I could put an arrow atop the 'b'. I don't know.

Jarrod -- Thanks so much for your efforts here. This is such an incredible resource; there just doesn't seem to be anything like it out there for the other marques.

Iconography, symbology, corporate identity -- all these things are mysterious to me. And, our reactions are *so* personal.

Like everything else, we'll get used to whatever you come up with, and then we'll miss *it* when it's time to move on to a *new* appearance. Just like a good pair of shoes.
