Hello all,
My '92 240's passenger side door trim is starting to show the chrome ... it looks like the matte black (paint?) has chipped away and I'd like to know what kind of paint it is so I can repaint it. Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly welcome!
My second dilemma is that I've been told my Inge needs a new timing belt. I called a couple of places, and one quoted me $400 for the timing belt alone, and another quoted $800 for the timing belt, and some other stuff that I was told 'should' be done at the same time. Is this usual? Living in the Washington, DC area ain't cheap, for sure! *sigh*

Give Joe a call, at Expert Volvo Repair 301-587-6998. Get a quote on replacing just the belt, and a quote on relacing the belt and the three shaft seals.

Thanks, Bruce ... since I've made Inge's appt. already, I'll see how Scott's does w/her. If I'm not satisfied w/their quality of work, I'll keep Joe's number for backup.
Thanks!

I had the same problem and used black bumper paint. I thought it would be a little more resilient than other kinds of paint. It matches the original pretty well and after a year or so it's holding up well. Just make sure you sand it well with some steel wool, use a black or dark gray primer, and be very careful with your masking job.

Bumper paint, really? will it give the 'textured' finish like the rest of my trim? If so, I'll try it! Thanks!

The local Volvo dealers in the Dallas area quote 1.5 hr labor @ $85/hr + $28 for the timing belt. Anybody who is is asking $400 is way off and probably hasn't dont one before. It can be done in less than an hour with the right tools and a $10 aftermarket belt. Also, it's a good time to replace the drive belts for $30 for all 4.
You may need the harmonic balancer and I would recommend a Volvo part for $135, not the cheaper aftermarket ones.
The paint for the trim can be found from Dulpicolor in a flat black. just lightly sand the chrome first.

The guys who quoted the $400 price were supposedly Volvo specialists. I've checked out the shop that's right around the corner from my house and they're rated w/4 out of 5 stars ... they must know somethin' over there. We'll see.

Ahhhh, timing belt, the $10 part and an hour and a half of labor blown up into a BIG DEAL.

|

|
Just the Timing belt should be half the price you were quoted. $200
The belt is about $20 and it's 2.5 hours labor for anyone who's done it more then once.

In the case of the Timing Belt, you might get a better deal from a foriegn car place as opposed to 'Charlie's' down the street. a place that knows Volvo's also knows that this belt is very easy to do and he wont be guessing on the Labor hours and aggrivation. This belt is much easier then Hondas and others.
I think a friend got a price of $125 From a Volvo Dealer, several years ago. That's why I threw out that $200. It has been a few years.

If you haven't tried already I have a secondhand recommendation for Scott's Specialties at http://www.4volvoservice.com/ . My wife's '89 240 came to us from its original owner who had been taking it there its whole life, and it was meticulously maintained. (We moved to the west coast shortly afterward, so I can't comment firsthand, but take it for what it's worth.)

Great news! Inge's appointment is set for tomorrow at Scott's! They're gonna change ALL her belts (including the timing belt, of course) for $264!!! I'm excited! Thanks for all your suggestions, everybody!
I just love y'all! *sniff, sniff*

Well, they emailed me back and quoted about the same price as the shop around the corner. Even though they're allllll the way out in Rockville, I'd still consider them, since they're truly Volvo specialists. Thanks sooo much!
