Please Help: trying to finish tranny swap before tomorrow. Need Help!!

I have a '89 244 that had a bad auto AW70 tranny. I am trying to put in a AW70L from a 745 as I was told that this was a better tranny and that it would more or less bolt right in. Well I have run into some difficulty:

I did not mark the flywheel when I pulled it off as I thought that there would be a woodruff key or a pin or something; I tried to look at all of the little marks and grease spots and I think maybe I got it back on the right way... Not sure how to check it.

The other big problem is that where the flywheel speed sensor, or whatever that sensor is around 12:00, is located on the bell housing of my old trany there is a cut out for it on the bellhousing, and on the new tranny THERE IS NOT a cut out! Will the sensor fit in that slot? The slot has the same dimesions but it does not open up, it is just a slot inside the housing. On mine the whole area is totally cut out. Do I have to cut into the bellhousing to make it fit?
Please Help as I am totally stuck in my driveway until I can put a trans back into my car.
Thank you in advance

If your new tranny's bellhousing does not have the same cut-out as the old tranny's bellhousing, then you need to swap bellhousings. The bolts are behind the torque converter, so you would have to pull the TC off. You would probably want to have a new TC shaft seal handy before you go and do that.

Alternatively, you could try cutting out a hole in the new bellhousing. While I haven't personally tried that (and never would), it seems possible.

As for the flywheel (a.k.a ring gear) orientation, there is info and a picture in the FAQ. Take a look here:

Good luck.

Matt are you still online? I think I installed the flywheel correctly, as I started the engine without the tranny installed and it seemed to run and idle okay. Would it do that if the gear was installed incorrectly?

I ended up cutting out the hole as it was almost cut out by the way they made the bellhousing anyway. I was about to swap bellhousings but then remembered that the bellhousing from the non locking trannys and the Llocking tranny are incompatable with the different torque converters!
Thanks,
unfortunatly I could not find that FAQ when I looked in the 700FAQ nor by a search... before I bolted the flywhell on.
