BW35 question 140-160

Does anyone know if the BW35 tranny was the same in all cars that used it? The reason I am asking is that I am thinking about buying ANOTHER 164 but the tranny needs some work and I just spent $1200 on a rebuild for my '75. I see that some other cars also used the BW35. WOuld these all be identical? Thanks as always

BW35 question 140-160

When I needed to replace the BW35 in my daughter's 122, I bought a good, used one from a 164 ($75), only to find that the tail housing was a few inches longer. A little surgical shortening of the propshaft was performed and we were good to go. Ever consider upgrading to an AW71 with overdrive? Simply cut the bellhousing, rotate to the proper orientation, re-weld the bellhousing, and bolt it up. Sure, it needs to be wired up, but it's well worth the effort.

BW35 question 140-160

All 164 BW35s should be interchangeable. Trannies to fit other engines
will have different bellhousings and possibly different output flanges.
Get out your tape measure and you can tell.
