Removing J type solenoid 444-544

Would like to know how to remove the J type solenoid from the overdrive unit in order to replace o rings. Is it attached only by the thin nut to the overdrive unit or what, and can it just be pulled out without having to dismantle the whole overdrive unit? Am putting an overdrive M 41 into my 1965 544. Thanks.

The whole unit just unscrews -- the nut is part of the solenoid.

Often they'll come loose just with some big pliers (of course you don't want to crush the solenoid case). If it resists, you may need to make a tool for the nut by grinding a 1" wrench thin enough to sneak in there.

Note to others... this does NOT apply to D-type solenoids, which are entirely different.
