High Beams stuck on after steering column change 140-160

Replaced the steering column in my 71 140E. When I pull the switch with the lights off, nothing happens, but when the lights are on the high beams go on and I can't turn them off. If I ground a test light and touch it to the white wire on the switch (with the lights on, I haven't tried it with the lights off)I can hear the relay click; but the high beams stay on. Using the test light I found that the switch is hot if I pull it back, and disconnected if I let it snap back. There is a grey wire, two, both of them connected to eachother, and with connectors for bolts. I couln't remember where ther were located, so i just bolted them to the steering lock(grounded).

Turn signals work, but the horn doesn't. Not sure if they're related.
Everythin worked before the change.

When I had that happen, it turned out to just be a fuse.. probably not the problem in you case, but worth a quick look..

does this happen with the column cover off? I got stuck like that when the cover was on wrong and forcing the switch rearward.

Cover is off and sends power through when it is pulled back, but not when in normal position.
There is one fuse for the headlights, fuse is fine and the headlights work.

Sounds like the wires to the relay are incorrectly positioned or the relay is bad.
The column switch is working properly as it only gives a momentary "pulse" to the relay to either kick it "on" or "off" each time you pull on it. The actual headlight power doesn't go through the column (except to actuate the relay).

Got it! Thanks!
I fugured the switch was grounded because the turn signa;s worked, but I had to attatch a ground wire with a bolt to the switch.
