Transmission leak onto exhaust 200 1990

My 85 was doing the same thing 2 weeks ago, it seemed as if it was comming from the passenger side above the pan, getting a look at it would require lowering the tranny, again. I can now do it in less than a half an hour, but finding the time with 2 jobs and 2 kids has been a challenge this summer. Enough about me. The embarrising part of this was the smoke signals I was sending up at the stop lights.. So anyway I tried a quart of the tranny/stop leak and things have been going 90% better. Just lucky I guess

Hi,

check the dipstick-tube also! Mine was broken due to vibration, hard to recognize.

Good suggestions! The two most common leaks are possibly the rear tranny seal/bushing and the cracked cooling lines at clamp. I've had both!! Either one can leak on your exhaust. I suggest you thoroughly clean the area and find the leak.

Oh yeah, don't overlook the easiest fix of all - loose tranny pan bolts. BTDT with that one too. However, loose pan bolts might not cause a leak on the exhaust. Worth checking first anyway. As they say, simplest things first....

In our case ('89 245, auto tranny) this was the rear tranny tailhousing bushing and seal.

Fluid ended up on the O2 sensor, eventually fouled it and car drank fuel like there was no tomorrow.

Cured with new rear tranny bushing and seal AND new O2 sensor.

Hope that's not your situation!

I second all this. My experience was identical.

Check for a leak where the two transmission cooler lines are clamped to a bracket on the exhaust pipe.
