I'm in the process of acquiring a "new" 245 for the wife and kids. It's a '92, and already has the cargo gate in it. The current wagon has a third seat which I want to transfer to the new wagon. It was my understanding that you can only have one at a time (3d seat or gate), not both. BUT, I just saw a post and picture from Bob Wennerstrom where both were installed. Is this a "one off", or is it generally possible? Trying to feel through the headliner isn't as illuminating as it could be. Thanks in advance, all.

My ears were burning so I logged on this morning to see why:-)

My '91 wagon does have both installed. However, I've never run the third seat in the open position. It's possible that the gate would have to be temporarily removed to use the third seat. Maybe just swinging the gate up into its clips would be enough though. The gate I have can be removed in about thirty seconds by twisting the thumbwheels at the top and popping it out of the brackets. I don't know if the earlier gates had that feature or not.

Maybe I'll have time this afternoon to swing the seat open and see if it will latch with the gate down. Do you really want the gate closed and the third seat set up at the same time? Or do you just want to be able to go back and forth without removing anything?

I just want to go back and forth without removing anything. This car will be the official family hauler, so no extra steps ("just take the gate out if you are going to use the 3d seat, dear") equals happy wife. And happy me.

If I remember, the 3rd seat has latches that hook to brackets on the back of the 2nd seat. The one in my 1983 245 did, anyway. If the latches can get though a hole in the cargo gate is ought to work.

Feeling through the headliner is a lost art. It is easy to pull out the headliner holding band for a short distance to find the upper seat belt anchors, and the read hand grip anchors. BTDT.
