Noisy IPD Turbo Cam in 86 230FT

I installed a Turbo cam from IPD into my 86 740 last week. I shimmed the valves (cold) so they were .014 to .015 across the board. I also installed new hushers on each stem.
This cam has a substantially higher lift than the original one. Is it to be expected that there would be more valve clatter because of this? It sounds as though I did not set the valves at all.
TIA
JD

Valve clearance is set on the base circle, if the cam has higher lift the base circle is usually smaller. Always true for in-block cams, maybe not for OHC with removable bearing caps?

i believe kane has a very good point. i and others i have talked to prefer to set the valves while motor is hot/warm, because this the temp the motor needs the clearances to be correct. i shoot for .018 clearance. just my experience
buy the way how do you like the cam?
good luck

If you replaced the hushers, then set the clearance, then that may be the reason. They will compress after a little bit, enlarging the clearance.

The way to do is to install the cam, check clearance for what shims need to be replaced, then replace the shims and install the new hushers.

I checked and shimmed the old cam first, before removing it and installing the new cam with hushers. I found the clearance diference to be negligible.
Howver you point is well taken. I wish I had hung on to the shim kit a bit longer instead of shipping it back.

hi there, you must adjust the valves on the new cam, especially since its not a volvo cam and ground on completly different core. when i installed two different volvo cams the valves have been within specs. when i installed the turbo cam i had to change every shim. when i installed the vx cam all the shims were close within specs. so shimming the old cam first is the same as not shimming at all. did you check the numbers after you installed the new cam?
good luck

Yes, as I indicated, the clearances were rechecked post-installation and found to be within spec. Perhaps I had better check again.
