Service Engine Light on in 93 Classic

Just checking with you all:

The "service" dash indicator came on in the 245 Classic. I've read in FAQ that this merely suggests an oil change at a certain interval? What, in fact, does it indicate? Anything serious?

I was planning on changing the oil and taking it on a 1200 mile trip next week.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

It just means that. An oil change is in order for your car. Next week is probably a great time to do it. It is a timing device to remind you that you've driven about 3000 miles or 4800km.
Nothing to worry about. Mike

That's what I thought. However, I've had the car for 10K miles, conducted three oil changes in that time, and never had the light come on again. What gives? Just sort of random?

10K it is. I had no idea, but I figured I'd look it up: in the owner's manual . Oops, I put in 92 not 93.

What I don't see, is instruction on resetting it. Speaks of having the dealer do it. No button in the picture either. Hmmm.

Just found this in the FAQ:

740/940 1989-1995, 760 1988-1990, 960/90 through 2000 . On these cars there is a small black, circular rubber plug in the clear plastic of the instrument cluster. Carefully remove the plug ... then take a very small phillips screw driver or even a nail and push in the re-set pin just behind the hole in the clear plastic. The button will click. Replace the plug and the service light is re-set. The later 960/90 series cars have 10k service intervals. Don't let your dealer tell you that you need a "scan tool" to reset this lamp: they are referring to the "check engine" lamp, not the "service engine" lamp.

Will that work for the 240?

Sounds the same to me. I know I've reset a 940's once and don't recall the plug being there, but the arrangement sounds similar.

On the 240, 91 and later I believe, there's a button in the lower right hand corner of the cluster's plastic bezel. It is the head end of a small cable assembly akin to the shifter on your 10-speed. You need to push the inner piece in a half-inch or so, using a thin, stiff tool, like a paper clip.

When that doesn't work, as I hear often is the case, you need to reach behind the speedometer to release the spring-loaded drive wheel. Or remove the lamp.

Thanks for your responses, Art. I really appreciate it. I will give it a go later today. I will need to work carefully, though - I've already broken the trip odometer tab recently!

Best regards,
pu
