New York City Area Amazons - Report from Bear Mountain... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

Wendy, the girls, "Virginia" and I made the trip up to Bear Mountain for their "Cruise Night" last night. All I can say is - WHAT A BLAST. There must have been over 300 cars there and one of the first I saw upon pulling in was a '72 or '73 1800ES. Although I did not care for the wire wheels it was in great shape.

We arrived around 7:30PM. I was shocked by the terrific organization; $2.00 per car to get in, then a guy flagged us into the show car area. As we drove by row after row of vintage Corvettes, Mustangs, '32 Ford coupes and every piece of American iron ever created Wendy said "oh man, we do not belong in here, these cars are in incredible shape." Upon closer inspection there were plenty of older cars of less import marque-wise as well as worse condition than "Virginia" so we pulled into a space as directed and took a lay of the land.

Other than the aforementioned 1800ES I did not see another Volvo. In fact, "Virginia" drew quite a bit of interest which surprised me considering the dearth of foreign iron. There was a beautiful '60s Lancia, a Triumph TR6, a very recent Ferrari F355 and a Benz or two but there were probably fewer than a dozen imports out of the whole show car lot. Of course the "civilian" car lot was full of them, but that is another story.

I was approached by the owner of the 1800ES, a guy named Michael Rosa who lives in Westchester. He has an outfit called RVVR that specializes in 1800's and 122's. Has anyone on here dealt with him?

We walked around a bit and it was a pleasure to find out that Wendy has a taste for '58-'60 Corvettes, my favorite car growing up. I guess there is one in our future - like 2045.

Wendy put the gate down, the hatch up and set up a picnic in the back with the girls. This actually drew quite a crowd and some picture taking since it would be impossible to tell what year the photo would have been taken. The sun went down and an enormous full yellow moon rose over Bear Mountain as the 300+ cars (and did I mention 400+ motorcycles?) revved up and drove off. On the way out we got an incredible amount of attention and one guy on a Harley yelled out "What a beauty! Light 'em up!" Explaining to Wendy what that meant made her laugh for three minutes.

We drove up to the event on the Palisades Parkway but drove across the Bear Mountain Bridge on the way home and man, what a great road leading south toward the Taconic. US1 in California has nothing on the six or seven miles of road there.

It was a magical night and I would love to coordinate another one in late August or early September. Any New York-area bricks who wish to participate should let me know so I can e-mail them in advance (instead of putting it on the board five days in advance like this time). I have a plan whereby we could all park together.

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

Jeff,

I'm in Westchester too sometimes. I could bring my 1970 1800E.

Funny thing, I was cruising up 9A on Wednesday evening and saw that beautiful 1800ES charging up the the big hill out of Croton like it was taking it by storm. Very cool.

Tom

HI Jeff,
Sorry I missed it! I really would like to get there sometime this summer/Fall.
Please let me know the next time you are going.
I'm hoping to throw an OD trans. into my car this weekend,(weather and time permitting).
Chris

Hello Jeff,

I'd be interested in adding to the classic Volvo presence at the Bear Mountain cruise. I usually bring the MG, but my 544 could use some exercise now and again. It's no show piece, so I don't know whether the Bear Mountain crowd would let it in, but it's got some real World Rally and SCCA Pro Rally history. Please add me to your email list for updates on your plans.

Best Regards,
Bearman

Hello Bearman:

PLEASE, you should have seen the condition of some of the cars there, and they were not nearly as significant as a 544. You cannot imagine the looks on people's faces as they were gazing into the cockpit of the Chevy Vega.

I am a member of SCCA (New England) and I would love to see your car. The Bear Mountain website says Cruise Night is running through October so I suggest we pick a Wednesday in September after Labor Day. How about September 14th?

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

Sounds GREAT!!

Do you think your car would bring you to the KC meet in September? The block
of rooms is full but the hotel still has other rooms at somewhat higher rates.

Hello George:

I am not aware of what you are talking about. Is this a Volvo meet or some wider-reaching thing?

At any rate I have commitments in New York that will prevent me from traveling then, especially since I will be out-of-town for most of August.

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

KC VCOA National Meet Sept 16-18 120-130 1967

Need to read your Rolling Mag a little closer!

Check this:
http://www.vcoa.org/events/2005-national_meet/

Also starting Aug 3 the Dutch V44 Volvo Club will be touring the USA.
I posted their schedule a few days ago on this board and they will be
close to you also. I'm planning to drive with them from Joplin to Oklahoma
City on Aug 13. That tour is also mentioned on the page cited above.

Best regards!

Dutch V44 Tour Passes by my place :) 120-130 1967

Just looked at the route and they'll be staying the night of Aug 5 in Laurel, MD, which is about 20 mi from where I live in VA. Mayhaps I'll have to slip on by and say hi. You think they'd mind?

- Dan

I have every reason to think that at least some of them will be very happy
to meet Volvo enthusiasts here in the US. (If they shipped 93 cars over they
must have at least that many people, so even if you run into a grouch or two
there should be plenty of friendly folks among 'em!)

So as a brief answer to your question, NO, they wouldn't mind; they'll probably
be very glad to see you.

KC VCOA National Meet Sept 16-18 120-130 1967

Hello George:

I must admit I am not a member of the Club yet, so I do not get "Rolling". I sort of feel like this is my club. What are some of the highlights?

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

Well, there's a lot of good stuff in Rolling and it is only $25/year.
With the discount program you may be able to save that much pretty quick.
But the articles and ads in Rolling are what makes it so valuable to me.

The highlights of the meeting are pretty well spelled out, and everything
I know is in the link I put in my last post:
http://www.vcoa.org/events/2005-national_meet/

To me the biggest highlight is that it is within fairly easy driving distance
for me. I'm just hoping that some of my associates from the higher levels
can come to the "real world" so I can meet them face to face.

Hello George:

Well that pretty much sells me. I need another motorsports title in the house anyway.

I will be out-of-town on business starting August 3rd so I will miss the Dutch caravan and that is a crying shame. I cannot read Dutch but their website makes it look like they have some gorgeous machines.

I hope the person who drew the map on their site is not their travel agent. They have New York City placed in Delaware.

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo
