Yesterday I got into my 1986 740 and it ran rough (quite unusual) for about 20 seconds and shut off. When I tried to restart the engine turned but no start. Being in a hurry I took the wife's car. Today I went out to diagnose the problem and the engine turns and then there is a clunking sound and it stops. It did this twice and I stopped trying. Can anyone help me with this. Is it something I can repair my self or do I need to send it to a shop? I am mechanically inclined. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 beibg the best I am about a 7.5. Please help.

No, I removed the cover and the timing belt is intact. It could use a changing along with the tensioner. I was thinking along the lines of the crankshaft but can't say for certain. When cranking the car the camshaft and crankshaft turns a half turn clockwise then springs back counterclockwise.

Is the belt turning the camshaft?

It can appear "intact" but have sheared off some oil-soaked cogs at the crank sprocket.

The belt is turning the cam shaft and crank shaft about a half turn. Then it springs back.
