1980 Volvo 264 GL 200 1980

Hello All,

I am really not familiar with this particular model (I usually deal with the 240 series). Are these desirable? The one that I have has a very good body, great interior, but has problems with the injectors. Is the car worth investing in or would this make a better V8 Conversion?

Is is loaded and everything works, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

They are not desirable. If the car is free, and runs, drive it. They get terrible fuel mileage. They run rough at idle, and that's a good point about that engine.
By far the best thing you can do is run like hell and find a real Volvo with a red block four banger.

Truthfully I could never stand working on those old B27/28 rat box V6's. Once they went through them and made B280's out of them they were not too bad at all. If it were me I would drive it until it gave me grief, in the mean time I would stock pile all of the necessary parts for a V8 conversion.

This is the motor that gave the Volvo (PRV) 6-cyl a bad name - usually a combination of 4-letter expletives... Low mileage, meticulously maintained, and decent-running (no fierce tapping indicating worn-out cams, that's the goal), then I'd run it until it packs in - using synthetic oil & changing it regularly. The most common terminal issue was coking up of oil passages to the valvetrain, and (full) synthetic oil won't coke up. It's like Mark said - use that borrowed time to collect parts for a conversion. Unless it's really in mint condition - then it may be worth trying to preserve, but not as a daily driver.

Yes. The V6 was among the worst engines Volvo ever used. Was a joint project with Peugeot and Renault, thus the acronym PRV-6. It was an unmitigated disaster.

Many folks believe it's best used as a boat anchor.
