Headlites hooked thru Ignition Switch 444-544

Got to thinking the other day, driving my late model Saab (yeah I know), that the headlites hooked thru the ignition switch was kind of a nice convenience. I don't have to remember to turn the headlites off and it gives me daytime running lights, which I happen to think is a useful feature.

So Im wondering if there is any reason not to hook up my P210 that way.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bob

Headlites hooked thru Ignition Switch - Carry 'repair wires' 444-544

I carry a few wires with assorted insulated males and females. You can overcome any switch failure by bypassing it with a jumper wire.

Better yet, carry some wire, terminals, and a crimping tool. These items do not weigh much or take up much space.

Actually, my brake switch is wired directly to switched 12v right now.

Headlites hooked thru Ignition Switch 444-544

Bob;

I also recommend against running all the headlight current through the IGN switch...if you want DRL or just the convenience of auto shut-off, both can be simply and effectively realized with a relay slaved off the IGN switch. Yes it is another item which can fail, but properly sized, a slave relay can be expected to be quite reliable....I wouldn't think twice about including it in a circuit like this.

Cheers

Headlites hooked thru Ignition Switch 444-544

I drove a 544 for a long time that had the headlights hooked up as such, and never had a problem... but I wouldn't do it directly. I don't think the switch is designed to handle that much current. You'd want to hook the lights up to a relay which in turn would be hooked to the ignition switch I'd think. And having a relay in there makes for one more thing that can potentially fail when you need your lights the most...
