No start - shift lock 200 1993

I'm having an intermittent problem wherein the car does not start. It does not turn over. However, if you press the shift lock unlock button and then try, it starts right up.

So something is going on with either the shift lock or maybe the neutral safety switch. Any pointers? Problem is now happening daily.

Thanks

Ted,

I'm surprised no one has answered you. I would guess that your difficulty lies with that the mechanism under the gear selector that ensures selection alignment is proper.

For example, I know that without proper alignment, reverse lights won't work even though the car is obviously in reverse, and same goes for no start condition, even though the gear selector is in park or neutral.

I believe there are two mounting screws on the side of the selector plate that travel through oval holes. Some experimentation with them could solve your prob.

Best,

Marty

I am now thinking that it is my alarm relay freaking out. I had it tied in through the neutral safety switch wire. I totally forgot about that. So I cut the thing out today and spliced the line back together to see what happens.

There's a pair of plastic bushings on the shift linkage under the car, that disintegrate and make for a lot of slop in the mechanism. But a forgotten "kill" switch, or starter disable, is one that bit me before long ago.
