Instrument cluster ground? 900

Hi all,

First time addressing the collective technical wisdom of the group. My newly acquired 1991 944T (135k) seems to have an intermittent annoyance problem with the instrument cluster. When applying brakes with a somewhat-random combination of turn signals, the "bulb out" light comes on, although all the bulbs are OK. This behavior is dependent on whether the headlights are on or not. Also, the water temp. gauge sometimes jumps all the way back to 0, particularly as the car is warming up.

I suspect a bad ground somewhere. What would be the most logical place to look first? (And then second :)

Also (a repeat from an earlier post), can anyone recommend a good independent shop in West L.A. / Santa Monica area?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

whoops looks like I sent you a blank page there.
Anyway, check your bulb sockets for corrosion or poor contact. That can cause the bulb failure light to go on and off or when you step on the brake. It's based on sensing the resistance in the circuit. Doubt it would be a ground though.
As to the temp gauge, it's in all likelyhood the sensor on the engine (see the FAQ on 900 series) probably needs replacement .
Can't help you out on the LA connection. If you go to the car talk website, www.cartalk.com, I think they keep a roster of mechanics recommended in various locales and make specialties.
good luck

Thanks!

So, it's actually 2 different issues... I'll check/clean the sockets, and will probably just live with the gauge for now, until it totally fails.

And also thanks for the FAQ pointer.

Best,

Alex
