Just heard on the TV news that Volvo is considering helping lower crashes due to drunk driving.

Their solution would be an onboard breathalyzer that would be integrated into the seat belts. The driver would have to blow .08 or less for the setbelt to work, and the car would not start unless the seatbelts were in use.

Your opinion?

How about stricter driver licensing requirements, other than hand one out to anyone that walks through the door and can see an eye chart, more stringent rules governing beginning/young and older drivers, and more funding for the overworked and underpaid law enforcement folks to be able to put more officers on the street to actually enforce the existing traffic laws? Beats the heck out of another computer controlled gizmo that will break, leave you stranded and then have to pay big bucks to fix.

The car should administer an IQ test instead. That would stop the DWIs AND the morons.
"I'm sorry, sir or madam, but you are too stupid to operate a motor vehicle"

CLICK.

I think it would be better just to make the car so complex to operate that
you couldn't do it drunk - like a Harrier jet or something...

Mandatory prison sentences and permanent disqualification from driving
would probably help too.

Hmm, sounds like BMW's IDrive should about solve the problem then. In my opinion, though, as a continent we absolutely need more stringent licensing requirements. "A driver's license is a privilege," we hear time after time - well how about raising the bar a bit to lend some weight to that statement? And, "Am I too drunk to drive? ...Nope, the car still starts!" is not what I want to contend with on the roads.
