Having an 85 740, wipers started to wobble over the yrs. I figured age, linkage getting sloppy, elongated holes, etc. Decided to get some junk parts and fix the linkage. While looking at the Haynes manual, showed a pic of "cable adjusting nut" with no explanation. Removed the entire assembly and found the nut. Grabbing the frame the cable rides on, it would twist/move. Cable end has a flathead slot, so held the nut and tighteded the cable couple turns until the frame would not move/twist. Replaced and like new. So if you think everything is wore out, try this first.

Walt, is this cable end under the left hand (driver's) shaft?

Yes, near the cam shape, where the cable wraps. When you pull the entire assembly, at the end, drivers side.
