1988 240 dl wagon 245k starter has locked up ! Anyone know if there is a rebuild kit available , and where to get one ? I checked a few parts stores and a reconditioned starter is around 175-200 bucks way out of my price range since i am still fighting a fuel injector problem lol . Thanks for the info !!

    I have taken many Starters apart. Easy.

    Once you discover what the problem is, go buy the parts, that are often very common to many starters.

    While at it, clean the insides of the brownish dust, oil, etc.

    Good possibility it is the Solenoid.

    If you have to replace the Solenoid, you will need a very hot soldering iron to melt the solder on those terminals.

    You can often get a second hand starter for about a quarter the reco price and still get a three month waranty. Won't always last as long, but they're cheap enough that it doesn't matter.

      And FWIW a lot of the rebuilds/recons are done very poorly anyhow.

        Tell me about it, I had one fail on me which had been rebuilt. It turned out that the genius who put it back together left out the bolt that the armature pivots on. The solinoid sort of half engaged with some ecouragement and tapping with a hammer. I think they just didn't put it in tight enough and it fell out.
