A little help with a Mulitmeter? Anybody? 200

Hey all,

Just picked up a decent Multimeter from Home Depot, looking forward to checking out some pesky electrical stuff...

Does anyone have an special hints, websites, advice etc. on testing useful stuff like fuel pump circuitry (current) and fuses and things like that? Again, Im not a whiz with electronics, but enough to know what the hell im doing, but as always, any help is more than appreciated!

Thanks much, and enjoy the bricks!

Just as with the car itself, read the owners manual. Usually the 10 amp circuit is separate and the the lead(s) will need to be plugged into a separate jack. The best use I made of the hi current function was to diagnose a bad fuel pump. To do that, I removed the fuse and connected the leads to the terminals in the fuse box.

The Volvo green manuals give a lot of trouble shooting guidelines based on the use of a multimeter. If you don't already have a copy the lh2.4 fuel injection one would be good to get. Besides for that just ask some questions on what to expect for a particular problem that you might encounter.

You understand that to check current flow though a motor, you'll need a clamp-on ammeter, right? The internal ammeter on a VOM will only measure a few milliamps.

Motor current is a handy thing to be able to measure, but I have never really NEEDED to measure motor current except on a starter motor.

It's not hard to find inexpensive VOMs that read up to 10 amps. They work well for measuring fuel pump current; starter motors though, I don't think so!

Check out the electrical circuits section in the 700/900 FAQ, he has a link to the Fluke web site with some great info on using multimeters. Have fun!
