The engine will work but you need to make sure all the engine sensors, wiring harnesses including ECU and ICU from the 89 remain in the 89. You may need to swap intake manifolds but at least the throttle body and AMM. Dan

The 89 system will need the speed sensor. Swap, drill, chop, whatever.

          Good Luck,

so do just need to mount the speed sensor on the 87 tranny?or is there something inside the transmission also? 200

i was hoping to use the tranny that came with the engine, but i could use the 89 ,if i had no recourse...kris...oh ,they are both automatics...what is the speed sensor's purpose in life?

The speed sensor is, IIRC, a crank position sender, too. It is vital for the ICM to set the spark timing.

The LH system beginning in 1989 handles more info than the older systems, and it needs to know those data about the engine speed and position.

To keep the 1987 tranny, you could swap just the bell housings. Or - for a little less labor - swap in the 1989 tranny.

              Good Luck,

              Bob

PS From other BB posts, I would recommend a new crank position sensor and its connecting wires, as long as you have such easy access. You might also consider replacing the rear main seal, too.

It would be a good thing to find out if the 87 engine block is drilled and tapped for the crank position sensor. Dan
