Clutch Stops on the floor on my 1985 740 gl 700 1985

When i push in the clutch on the car the pedel will stop at the floor and doesn't come back. After looking down at the pedel linkage i can see that at least the end of the cable that connects to the pedel is intact. Could it still be the cable if not what else. Hopefully I dont need a new clutch. Where else can i look to see what the problem is. Thanks Brittany.
