740GLE octane and noises. 700

hello,

i have just purchased a delightful 1990 740GLE estate, with the 16 valve engine. i am curious as to what the octane requirements are for this engine - unfortunately the car did not come with a handbook. it is an australian market car.

also, the car has a whirring noise at the front of the engine. it does not seem to be related to any belt driven accessory. though i am familiar with the eight valve versions of the engine, the 16 valve is foreign to me, so just after some pointers as to where to start. i understand they use some sort of balance shaft? are these known to cause a whirring noise?
