Exhaust problem 200 1988

Last night when I was leaving work I noticed that my car had very little power when I pressed the gas and that my already noisy muffler was even more throaty and gurgley then before. When I downshifted it made this "blub-blub-blub, pop" sound.
I pulled over to see if someone had stuck a bananna in my tailpipe and found no banannas. When I started my car up again it returned to normal and stayed that way for the 1/2hr ride home.
I am thinking that my catylic converter (the original) must be shredded up in there and some pieces got lodged in the exhaust.
I have little experience working on my 240 and none with the exhaust so I was wondering what you bricksters thought. Thanks for any info!
