960, broken timing belt 900 1994

Asking for a friend, a question for the 6-cylinder gurus (not me!).....

If the timing belt breaks while the engine's at idle, is it certain that damage will occur? Or might the valves and head survive?

Yes, we know it's considered an interference engine. He's trying to decide whether to swap the engine immediately or first invest the time to try a new belt. Is there a slight chance the engine survived?
