Why time the intermeadiate shaft on belts? 700 1986

I'm in the process of changing the long overdue- 90K+ - timing belt on my '86 744T and wondering why the intermeadiate shaft, on this engine with distributor driven off the back of the cam, is important? Isn't this just driving the oil pump?

No doubt the cam and cranks MUST be timed.

I will set it up to the marks on the belt, but had to ask.

Thanks.
