Whew. Ok...I have to calm down here. I am in the process of maybe buying this 1987 240 but am having problem after problem with it. It's driving me crazy. Here's the new and potentially most serious problem. I drove it on the freeway yesterday and noticed it had some shifting problems especially with more acceleration. The transmission does not seem to delay shifts as so many posts here describe. Instead it seems to not be able to fully pick a gear. It goes back and forth between gears. It does not happen with slow acceleration, only with either high acceleration or at higher speeds and higher gears. It also makes a pretty serious clacking sound when this happens. I checked the fluid level and it looks good (granted, I do not know how long ago the fluid was changed). I checked the kickdown cable and it retracts smoothly. This problem developed over the matter of 3 or 4 days. I am looking for best and worst case scenarios here. The car has 104,000 miles on it and is not mine yet. I can still avoid this being my problem. But if it's fairly simple I would like to fix it and buy the car still. Please help. Thanks
