HELP!!! Fuel Pump Failure 120-130

I just installed a new original fuel pump to go with my rebuilt carbs. After getting it all together and while tuning the carbs, the fuel pump rocker arm sheared off inside the engine (causing quite a racket for a few seonds) for no apparent reason. Why would this happen, and how should I go about getting the broken piece out of the engine? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
