My 1987 245DL (Torslanda-built 2.3L B230F with 5-speed manual) runs well, at 251,000+ miles!
Thanks for the great help from this forum - I have solved many problems by checking other posts in the past, but now I am stumped.
Lately, my Svensk Bil (Swedish Car) has been showing strange symptoms:
1. It needs extra gas when turning over to start, and it seems like the idle or choke is too slow.
2. It is stalling with the A/C on, or on sharp turns at low RPM in neutral.
3. The temp gauge moves towards and just into the red zone, going uphill or with the A/C on. (It goes lower when I run heat and/or turn off the A/C and/or start driving downhill)
4. I am hearing screeching with the A/C on, mostly right after startup, (can't tell if it's the compressor belt or not)
5. There is a bit of brownish smoke coming from underneath the intake manifold when the engine runs. Smells like burning gas.
Notes:
1. I tried to remove the fan clutch assembly, but the nuts were torqued too tight and seemed a bit stripped. After fiddling with the center spring, though, the overheating is less frequent, but still present.
2. No leaks in Power Steering fluid or brake fluid.
3. No leaks in coolant - just drained, flushed and replaced 7,500 miles ago. Also just replaced thermostat as well.
4. I don't know where the flame trap is nor am I 100% sure where the PCV is, or I would inspect/replace.
5. I may have been stressing the A/C compressor, though. This summer here in D.C. has been hot, and a previous owner converted it to R134a. It was running tepid, so I kept pumping R134a with some leak sealant into it, and it eventually ran ice cold. That's when I started to hear the screeching at startup, but for months it ran OK, until just a couple of weeks ago. I was also told that the condenser window should be clear, but while the A/C's on, it changes to milky white. Hope I am not ruining it by running it like that.
Thanks in advance!
