1984 B23F Wiring harness replacement...and Modifications 200 1984

1984 B23F Wiring harness replacement...and Modifications

I replaced my wiring harness,
Not a big deal. It took me 3 hrs including coffee breaks.

STEP ONE - DISCONNECT THE BATTERY !!

I started inside the car, unplugged the ECU and Fuel Pump relays
(now I know where they are). and worked my way out.

I needed to remove the Cruise actuator and the engine ground strap.

If I had to do it again I would remove the intake manifold as suggested by
(Volvo Parts and Service - 1801 W Evans Av - Denver, CO 80223 - 3814 (303) 937-1801)

The Knock Sensor and Temp Sender are easily confused.
The Temp Sender is in the head and connects to the engine Harness for the guage.
The Knock Sensor is in the block and connects to the Ignition Computer.

Now for the harness modifications

I decided to eliminate all the wire from under the front of the block.
I pulled the Alternator Exitation, Oil Sender, Alternator Power,
and Ignition wires from the branch that runs under the block.

The Alternator Excitation and Oil Sender were removed back to the firewall connector.

The Alternator power lead was discarded and replaced with a 60" 4ga with 2 eye lugs.

The Ignition wire was rerouted so the end that goes to the Ignition Computer
comes out of the harness at the Ignition Coil. I then rerouted it along the fender,
below the relay mounting rail, behind the battery and across the front of the car
in front of the radiator in the stock zip ties back to the Ignition Computer.

The Alternator Power and Ignition Harness run up the block and are anchored at the
AC Hose Bracket On the top of the Engine. The Alternator Power continues directly to the battery

The Alternator Excitation, and Oil Sender run along the top of the block to the AC bracket
and down to their locations.

The battery cable was non stock when I got the car and I replced the terminal with a single stud
terminal to land all the wiring feeds.

I will attach some pictures sometime this week

Good Luck and Don't Panic
As frequently mentioned when done you will be surprised the car ran at all.
