Brown transmission fluid - AW71 900 1993

The car is 1993 945T, with about 215k miles on the clock.

The mechanic at the transmission shop would not flush the fluid, he said it was very brown. Said also that if he did it I might be able to drive it off the lot. I had it flushed and filled about 20 k miles ago. The fluid is full. It shifts ok, except it won't go into overdrive until about 8 or 10 miles on highway and at least about 65 MPH or faster.

Question: What are my options?

I've read the people use in-line filter (for prolonging the tranny life at a rather late stage of problem.) Is that a viable solution?
