timing belt replacement; connecting the dots 200

Well, I'm still working on my brother's '86 240DL wagon with a B230. I'm having trouble synching the timing sprockets together to get it to run right. Both the cam sprocket and the ignition sprocket have dots on them, what do these dots correspond to? What position should they be in? The crank sprocket does not have a dot, what should as use as a reference point? What position should the crank sprocket be in? I have both a Chiltons and a Haynes manual for this car but both are pretty useless here. Thanks for your help.
