1990 Volvo wagon 740 turbo, starts but won't run

The problem started I had only gone 2 miles from home. It cut off on me. I could start it and it would run as long as I didn't put it in gear. As soon as I put it in drive it would cut off. It finally would go in gear and I got back home. Drove it a couple of days later went 20 miles on it no problems. Later that same day I went 8 miles and it quit and wouldn't run in drive again. I had it towed home. One minute it runs the next it doesn't. I was told to unplug and replug the MAF Sensor about 15 times. That seemed to help for a little while. Right before it cuts off the engine check light comes on. Should I replace the MAF Sensor? What else do you think it could be? Anyone help please
