After dissassembling and cleaning my dual SU HS6s today, I realized that I have no idea how to adjust the fuel mixture. Keep in mind that I know a little bit about carberators, but the last Carb I rebuild was the one in my 1977 Datsun F10 Coupe (the only non-volvo that I've ever owned) and that was sometime back in 1992-1993. I left the HIF6 SU's in my 1972 145 to a very qualified mechanic, so I never realled learned the tricks of the SUs
I know that carb tuning is supposed to be a process of dialing down the idle speed and keeping the mixture "just-right" While I can dial down the idle (keeping both in sync), I have yet to find the mixture adjustment screw.
Puoring over the diagrams in my Haynes Manual, the best I can find is a nut on the underside of the housing down where the needle drops into a sheath of sorts and where the gasoline enters. Is this where I need to adjust it, or did I overlook the correct adjustment location?
Why do I want to do this? Well, the car idles high (1500 rpms) and gas consumption is less than optimal. After adjusting the throttle linkages, I've been able to get teh idle down to 1000 rpms, but the car threatens to stall. The Haynes manual says that I need to get the car down to 800 rpms to properly adjust the setup.
