#4 Cylinder, Oil Leaks, and Manifold Fun 120-130

Well, I put some new NGK plug in today, tested my wires and the popping from #4 continues. Strangely it still stops when I pull the #4 wire, but starts again when I reattach it.

So.... Maybe it's some sort of valve problem or something with the rear SU. Dunno. My concern today is stopping oil leakage.

I pull the IPD valve cover and found that the old valve gasket was leaking badly at the rear and somewhat at the cap. So I put a new cork gasket in (should I be using silicone or is the cork sufficient?). I also started to replace the other leaking gaskets. Namely the Exhaust Manifold gasket, which was leaking noticeably at the #4 exhaust port. So I began the process of removing the SUs and pulling the manifold.

See my other post for how I screwed up with the SUs (no, not a catastrophic screw up, just annyoing), Anyway, I know the manifold is leaking exhaust back by #4 and I have a new gasket so I figure I need to replace it.

After getting to see the whole manifold w/o SUs, I realize that there's a big crack in the lower fork of the manifold (above the exhaust pipe flange). Later looking at it from the interior, I notice that it's not cracked through, but w/o restoration, it's probably just a matter of time.

Additionally, and more seriously, I realize that the entire front intake is completely broken. When I got the nuts and studs freed, the front intake fell off. It's still out there in the dark on my carport. Wow...

Keep in mind that this is the front cylinder (#1), not #4, so this is a *new* problem... Lucky me :)

Fortunately the Original owner gave me a ton of spare parts, including two additional manifolds. One is in great shape - just needs to be cleaned up and I'm ready to put it all back together.

So, does that happen often? Entire intake manifold snaping off.
More importantly, how has that been effecting my motor?
