Purpose of the rear grille on RR of wagon??? 200

OK, now I know that all of the wagosn from approx 75-93 all have this rear plastic grille mounted on the outside of the car. What is it's purpose? I rememer seeing a vacuum line attached to it and was wondering if it has something to do with the hvac system on the car? does it close off the system when the rec button is pushed???
