When you're hot, you're hot (Overheating Volvo) 700

My fathers Volvo has decided to throw another curve ball at us, after about an
hour of driving it starts dropping back cylenders and overheating.
It got us home once on two cylenders, running rough as you'd expect

The first time it started doing this, all the instrument panel warning lights
lit up (oil, temp, battery, etc) and the car "conked" out, initially, we
thought that we had "cooked" the motor and dollar signs were starting to
appear in my mind!

Is this a major (and costly) problem?

Has anybody out there heard of this happening before?

any advice would be much appreciated, as we use the car a fair bit on a daily
basis
