Temperature gage not working 700 1990

This 740 B230FT with M-46 has been left alone for just over one year. It would not start at the beginning but after jumping the fuel pump on 12 volts it started and runs good. I reconnected the fuel pump in its socket and now the engine starts and runs normally.

Since the car was not mine before storage I can not know if the temperature indicator had been running. Also the voltmeter is not giving the reading it should.

Temp. indicator: I see a connector under intake manifold with two wires, yellow and yellow/black. I suspect this might be the sensor connection.

Can I without danger of damaging something disconnect and short the two wires to show that a reading could be obtained in the instrument cluster? Or what other test could I run with a multimeter?

Voltmeter: Could it be wear with replacement being the only solution?

Waitng for your advices and Many Than
