excessive play in shifter 200 1988

hi,

in my new 88 wagon, i'm noticing a lot of play in the shifter on this automatic transmission car.

i.e., when i put the car in 'drive', sometimes the indicator that says which gear i am in will say 'drive' but the car will actually still be in 'neutral'. if i re-shift, (making the "D" light on the display slightly brighter), it'll go into drive. it sounds okay and shifts easily while i'm driving....i'm curious if anyone has had experience with this. i'm trying to get a feel for it so that i can just feel when i'm really in drive....

it concerns me because i can picture myself at some time in the future thinking that i'm in 'drive', trying to make a quick maneuver in traffic, and finding out that i'm in neutral, causing an accident. (i'm not trying any of those quick maneuvers until i either get it fixed or have a better sense of when it's happening, btw)...

any input on this appreciated.....is it just a loose shifter needing adjustment?

thanks!
