Update: HIF6 Carbs, Re-Sealed Gas Tank 120-130 1967

Just wanted to update you all on my carb conversion and tank repair.

I pulled my gas tank, scraped off the crumbling undercoating and cleaned it with a wire brush. It had been leaking around the filler neck since before I bought it, and it reeked of gas whenever I filled it up. I drained the tank completely and flushed it out. I then treated the filler neck, top and seam edges of the tank with POR15. Once dried, I reinstalled the tank (getting the rubber neck on to the tank spout was a big challenge). I also used some clay-rope to seal the tank to the car. Once back in, I reconnected everything and filled the tank.
No stench. No pool of leaking gas on my carport. No gas leakage at my filler neck. I'm quite happy now!

In case you're unaware, I recently picked up a pair of early model (single choke) SU HIF6 Carbs. Both were uniformly grungly, but once clean, they were in surprising great condition. I needed new heatshields and a new throttle linkage (both of Which were supplied by Danny - Thanks Again!) They arrived before I had the tank finished, so I was not able to get everything together until last night. I pinched the dashpot dampers from my HS6s (fit perfectly)

After a long crank (fuel took a while to get up to the carb), the engine fired up like a race horse (seems the idle was set at 2500 rpms). I played with the adjustments for a while until I got it down to 1000.

Problems so far: (1) Seems that I have a bit of a fuel leak on the bowl of the front carb. Not too serious, but I'll need to get a new O-ring gasket. (2) The bolt hole pattern on my box air filter do not match up, so I've filled the existing holes and now must cut new holes. (3) The individual heatshields do not shield the throttle linkages so they get really hot. (4) vibration in the motor seems to be rather high now. Especially when idling at 1000 rpms. I seem to be getting some new valve noise/mechanical noise from the engine

I've read that 1/2" phenollic spacers should be used in this setup. I have one spacer that came with a junked pair of Su HS6s that I picked up for parts. Does anyone have a spare that I could buy/trade/bum?? With spacers, what sort change would I see? Similarly, should I hunt up a pair of those intake ram horns and does anyone have a pair for the HIF6??
