Electrical antenna stupidity 200 1992

OK - I've been wrestling with my scan-tech replacement tail light package (the volvo brake/tail bulb & socket on the passenger side are doing the opposite of what they should), and while I have my tools out, I decide to try to install this great electrical antenna that I pulled from the junkyard. I hooked up the electricals to test it out and it worked fine.

I mounted it, then got in the car and turned the ignition. Blasted! Why doesn't it work now? I try it a few more times. Still nothing - what gives? Then I unmount it, lay it on its side, and test it out again. As I'm sitting in the car, I realize that my radio isn't on. I turn on the radio, and there goes the antenna! All the way OUT OF THE SHAFT because I had taken the top bracket off. The whole little plastic belt came off the the gear and out the top. Dang it!

I've tried to shove it back down in there, but there seems to be something blocking it. Any secrets before I take the whole little motor and housing apart?

The driveway history is filled with instances of my stupidity!
