92 940 turbo: poor mileage & smoke 900 1992

Hello all:

Today I had to make a trip to London, ON-- a little over 200km each way. I had to fill up twice to get there and back! That is around 125 miles per tank!

Once I noticed the rapid drop on the fuel gauge, I also noticed that the car was producing black smoke, and when I stopped I noticed that the tailpipe was very sooty. Surprisingly enough, the check engine light is not on!

I recently swapped out all the vacuum lines and cleaned the throttle body. The throttle position switch clicks immediately upon opening the throttle. There are no obvious driveability problems-- I was easily keeping up with traffic at speeds from 100-140kph.

I am going to try swapping out the fuel pressure regulator tomorrow. The next candidate is probably the engine coolant temperature sensor.

I have dealt with rich running Volvos in the past, but this is the first time I have encountered it with a turbo-- is there anything specific I should be looking at in the turbo system?

Any/all sage advice will be appreciated!
