Mystery Power Loss in '87 240 DL 200

HI!
My Fiancée’s 87 240 DL is suffering from intermittent loss of power. It occurs in all types of environmental conditions initially after being driven for at least 10 minutes. It looses power but idles OK. The more the accelerator is depressed, the worse it runs eventually stalling. It restarts OK after sitting for up to 1 hour but with the same issue, power loss, poor running with increased throttle. The issue usually resolves and it starts and runs ok after sitting overnight. It has been towed to the shop numerous times but is running fine when it gets there. I've unplugged the mass air meter when it is acting up but with no change in the condition. I've replaced the fuel filter and cleaned fuse contacts. My mechanic tells me that sensors such as the coolant temp. sensor readings shouldn't make a difference if the mass air meter is unplugged. He is at a loss to explain or diagnose the problem especially when it is always OK when he gets it. Could this be a failing pre-pump? Has the problem when the tank is more than half full.
Any suggestions??? Thanks for the help!
